Vietnam Academy for Water Resources (VAWR), which was formerly the Institute of Hydraulic-Electricity established in 1959, is the leading institution of irrigation &drainage technology and water resources management.

The Prime Minister of Vietnam signed the Decision No. 594 / QD-TTg onMay 102007 to establish VAWR on the basis of merging andre-organization of Vietnam Institute for Water Resources and Southern Institute for Water resources. The Academy is ranked as special level. The establishment of VAWR associated with its mission to become a center of excellence in water resources science and technology, to provide highly qualified human resources equal with other countries in the region and international, contributing to the successful implementation of the water sector in the country's industrialization and modernization course. VAWR owns facilities of research, modern laboratory in the key regions of the country and the scientific workforce, powerful technology with 1,200 officials and employees, available on: 30 Professor, Associate Professor; 70 Doctor of Science, PhD; 350 Master, the rest are Engineer, B.Sc.

During its history of development, in any circumstance, the Academy always actively contribute to the country’ socio-economic development course. From its establishment, the researchers of the Academy implemented the rehabilitation for Northern irrigation system, land reclamation for acid, salty soil in Mekong river Delta.

In recent years, the results of scientific research and technology of the Academy have contributed to preventing coastal and river bank erosion and, disaster mitigation, drought, floods, saltwater intrusion, environmental protection, modernizing management and operation of irrigation systems, hydroelectric and adapt to climate change, policy development. In particular, many new technologies have been granted as patents, technical advances. VAWR received a number of prestigious awards of the Government such as the Ho Chi Minh Prize and the research results have been widely applied in practice, such as drought and salinity intrusion forecasting, Pier lifting barrage,  movable ferry-style dam, rubber dam,  soil cement pile,  beams technology, water saving  technology, SCADA, deep suction  propeller pump, low  water head pump, ram pump, hydraulic pump, physical model, spillway, decision support system (DSS) in water resources management, v,v...

Being proud of glorious tradition, with our experienced researchers, we believe that VAWR will develop fastly in scientific research, become leading in regional irrigation, some fields can be equal to advanced countries in the world. The Academy should be the Center of Exellence for innovation in irrigation sector, high-tech and highly qualified consultants to cope with climate change, natural disaster prevention.
