Opening ceremony of the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) training course

28/04/2021

On April 26, 2021, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy for Water Resources (VAWR) in collaboration with the Asian Disaster Prevention Center (ADPC) organized the opening of an online training course on a decision support system model and increased crop growth DSSAT.

Attending the opening ceremony were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hung - Deputy Head of the General Planning Department, Dr. Nguyen Hanh Quyen - Coordinator of the ADPC and 11 learners from units under the VAWR, Institute of Water Resources Planning, Institute for Agricultural Environment.

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Hanh Quyen said, the training course on crop growth and decision support system model DSSAT is within the framework of a pilot production research project on using remote sensing data to forecast and evaluate yield crops in Vietnam, especially rice.

After the training course on “Using Google Earth Engine for drought monitoring and application of software products for drought and crop monitoring in the Mekong River (MDCW)”, this is the next training course co-organized by ADPC and VAWR.

The training course is organized to guide how to use advanced DSSAT software to build models for crop (rice) yield forecasting and after this training, there will be 02 continuing training courses follow will be organized with the same intensive form to use, apply DSSAT software for the registered experimental research area.

Regarding the training course, the ADPC had invited Prof. Dillip Kumar Swain - Agronomy (Agricultural Systems and Management) - Faculty of Agricultural and Food Engineering Kharagpur Institute of Technology - India; Mr. Susantha Jayasinghe and Dr. Nguyen Hanh Quyen - ADPC give detailed online lectures on how to install and use software for rice yield forecasting in Vietnam.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hung - Deputy Head of the General Planning Department thanked ADPC for coordinating with VAWR to organize the training course and affirmed that this training was necessary.

The training course aims to equip trainees with knowledge and skills in predicting crop yield in conditions with many adverse factors such as in the current climate change situation. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hung suggested that the trainees need to actively exchange to grasp the skills and experience of using DSSAT software.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hung hopes that after the course, the trainees would gain a lot of experience and knowledge from the training course organized by VAWR and ADPC.

The training course took place from April 26, 2021 - April 29, 2021.
